Fueling Progress at Historic Sites

Abundant, naturally occurring minerals drew early settlers to southeast Missouri’s “Old Lead Belt.” The French sought gold and silver, and instead found vast outcroppings of a shiny gray mineral called galena. Mining camps sprang up to work the sometimes mile-long deposits of what would eventually become Missouri’s state mineral.
